Do you even need a visa?
China opened up a lot in 2024โ2026. There's a good chance you don't.
โ Two easy ways in
๐ข30-day visa-free entry. Passport holders from 50 countries โ including the US, most of the EU, Australia, and now the UK & Canada (added Feb 2026) โ can enter for up to 30 days for tourism. No visa, no onward-ticket rule.
๐ต240-hour (10-day) transit. If your country isn't on the 30-day list, you can still transit visa-free for 10 days. Chengdu's airports (Shuangliu CTU & Tianfu TFU) both qualify. You just need an onward ticket to a third country.
๐ฌWhat to carry: a passport valid 6+ months and proof of your onward/return flight. That's usually it.

The real reason
Eat like it's the point
Chengdu is a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. Come hungry, ask for mild if needed.

The main event: a bubbling mala broth you cook at the table. Order a half-spicy (้ธณ้ธฏ) pot to hedge, and say โwฤi lร โ (mild) if you're not sure.

Mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, sweet-water noodles (tiรกn shuว miร n), twice-cooked pork, and cold โsaliva chicken.โ Most cost a few dollars.

๐ณ Paying for things
Add a Visa/Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you land โ they now work for foreigners and QR is everywhere. Keep some cash RMB as backup.
๐ถ Internet that works
Google, Instagram, WhatsApp & co. are blocked. Easiest fix: a travel eSIM that roams (routes around the firewall) or a trusted VPN installed before arrival.
๐ Getting around
The metro is clean, cheap, and signed in English. Use DiDi (has an English app) for taxis, and high-speed rail for day trips. Apple Maps works; Google Maps doesn't, really.
๐ฃ๏ธ Language
Little English is spoken. Download an offline translation app with camera mode โ it'll read menus and signs for you.
